What really is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is not witchcraft or trickery, it is simply an altered state of awareness and deep relaxation that allows your therapist to help you improve your focus and concentration by accessing the subconscious mind. Only 5% of our human brain activity is estimated to be conscious (the tip of the iceberg as such)-the other 95% is subconscious. However this part of our mind, it has been suggested, has the greatest influence over our personalities and behaviour. By accessing this (the rest of the iceberg), you are able to be more open to suggestions to make the helpful changes you wish to make-be it perceptions, emotions, memories, thoughts or behavior more directly.
As a fully trained and qualified hypnotherapist, it is my job to guide you to that deep state of awareness and access the subconscious mind using verbal cues. Whilst under hypnosis, you are able to focus and intensify your level of concentration to ignore the usual distractions and become more open minded to make the changes you want to improve your well being quickly and efficiently. Bypassing the conscious mind and going directly to the practical and unemotional subconscious mind to provide an often quicker and more effective resolution than other therapies.
Hypnosis works by quieting the conscious mind-the part of the mind you are very aware of-and enables you to tap into the subconscious mind or the memory bank where all your thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, emotions and behaviors originate and are stored. Whilst in this relaxed state, you can-if you wish-be guided to replace or modify your unconscious thoughts to what you consider to be more favorable and therefore driving your current behavior. Most people describe their experience as feeling in a trance-like state where they are aware of their surroundings but feel intensely focused and deeply relaxed.
How does clinical hypnotherapy differ from stage hypnosis?
Clinical hypnotherapy is a type of psychological therapy. The majority of clients remember everything that happens, you are aware of who you are, where you are and you usually remember everything that happened during your session. The therapist guides you, but you decide what action to take and cannot do anything against your will. You won’t reveal anything you don’t want to and you won’t lose control over your behavior. Clinical hypnotherapy simply makes it easier to experience suggestions and facilitate the healing process but does not force you to accept them or have any specific experience. Stage hypnosis-people volunteer readily to partake and are selected for their suggestibility. By volunteering they are already committed but again, will only ever do what they want to do.

Your typical first session
1 hour is the usual duration which includes a brief review of the form you have already completed in order for me to prepare your session and maximize the use of the therapeutic time with you. It is an opportunity to ask any questions from either side and ensure clarity.
There is then 4 stages
1.Induction:- A general relaxing speech where you begin to focus and ignore distractions with techniques possibly such as counting, breathing, muscle relaxation, approx 10 mins (I usually tailor this to you individually based on the information from your contact form so as to maximize the benefit to you individually-one approach does not fit all, every client is different and therefore my approach is always individual).
2.Deepener:-This follows smoothly on from the induction to help you to go into a deep state of hypnotic trance and may use imagery or sounds (again, based on you individually as I will have evaluated your responses to tailor make my approach).
3.Suggestion:-We begin to address the reason for your session (this may not happen much on a first session but more fact finding and exploration) this happens via verbal cues, repetition and imagery.
4.Emergence:-You are reversed out of hypnosis and become fully aware of your surrounds again.
FAQs
You are fully aware of your surrounds and able to react as required at any time.
Absolutely not, a therapist makes suggestions to address the reason for your visit to help -which may be in the form of reframing your memory, helping you to understand benefits for change etc. No therapist has power over your mind and you will not accept any suggestion you do not want to. It is not ethical to suggest anything immoral. It is in the therapist interest to help you resolve your reason for visiting
You may feel very relaxed and have a sense of calm but you should not be tired as this is not sleep. Before you leave a session, the therapist will check you are fine to leave.
That depends very much on the clients receptiveness and commitment to change the behavior or address the issue. As previously said, no therapist has the power to control your mind, suggestions for change are made, how you facilitate them and embrace them is entirely your decision. An example would be that a client presents with the desire to stop smoking because their partner has asked them to, but deep down they don't really want to-therefore this hypnotherapy will not work as the client doesn't really want to change and the subconscious simply will not accept it.
